The Kansas Locum Tenens program was established to provide temporary coverage for rural physician’s medical practice, so the rural physician may have time-off for personal or professional reasons. The primary purpose of the program is to provide medical practice relief to physicians in rural communities, in addition, strengthen and expand the rural components of residency programs and academic faculty exposure.
Locum Tenens services are available to rural physicians in family medicine, general internal medicine, and pediatrics. Coverage is provided to physicians in any county in Kansas, except Douglas, Johnson, Sedgwick, Shawnee, and Wyandotte.
To initiate the service, a rural physician or hospital must submit a Service Order Form to the Rural Health Education and Services office. A Locum Tenens provider – a resident or faculty physician of the University of Kansas School of Medicine – will then be requested. Locum Tenens providers may select the assignment of their choice, and are paid competitive rates for the service. Medical malpractice coverage is provided to Locum Tenens residents and physicians through the University of Kansas Medical Center.
